Lane County To Stand For Pay Equity and Healthcare
You have probably heard by now that Lane County workers are scheduled to strike on October 18. The outstanding issues are pay equity and healthcare. The County wants to impose additional health care costs without compensating the workers, even the lowest paid, for the additional out of pocket expenses. If the County's last offer was implemented many of these workers would make LESS than they are earning now.
We need your support! Here's what you can do:
- Come to our strike kickoff on Tuesday, October 17th at the First Christian Church, 1166 Oak Street, Eugene, any time from 5:30 - 7:30. Bring your union banner and let these workers know they have the support of ALL of the area AFSCME locals.
- Join our picket line. The County is closing a lot of their facilities (clinics, sanitation sites/dumps) and limiting hours in many other facilities. Check on the Local2831.org website for updates on picket sites and hours or email us, Debra Kidney, dkidney@afscme.org, or Doug Lantz, dlantz@oregonafscme.org, if you have questions.
- Donate to the Local's hardship fund which will start disbursing funds to members in need immediately.
- Bring in food donations to the union office, 688 Charnelton, or deliver them to one of the picket sites. This can either be food to be shared with the strikers (pastries, sandwiches, drinks) OR non-perishable food for members to bring home to keep their families fed. For non-perishables, please follow the guidelines for Food for Lane County, https://foodforlanecounty.org/donate/donate-food/ so we can donate any leftovers there following the strike.

Call Or Write The County Commissioners
This is a critical step. We need to increase the political pressure. The phone number to call to leave a message is 541-682-4203. You can also email the Commissioners, https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/settle-the-contract-for-lane-county-workers?source=direct_link&, which will drop a message in each of their email accounts. After you've taken this step, have two or three of your friends and family members do the same.
