By JEFF KLATKE
Council 75 President
I am proud to issue this report as President of Oregon AFSCME for April 2016. Please share this report with the members of your local.
The past two months have been a busy time for Oregon AFSCME. Our Executive Director Recruitment Committee coordinated interview panels on March 24 and 25 for the five finalist candidates for the new executive director, and on April 2 the Oregon AFSCME Board discussed the recommendation by the executive committee to hire Michael Seville as our new executive director. The board unanimously passed a motion to hire Michael and a formal employment agreement was finalized with him. Michael and his family will move from the San Francisco Bay area and Michael will begin as the executive director in mid-June. More information about Michael can be found on our website. We are planning to have local presidents’ meetings throughout the state to introduce Michael and talk about the next work for Oregon AFSCME to engage in. Board members will be invited to attend those Presidents’ meetings to meet Michael as well.
The dates and location of local presidents’ meetings so far are as follows: June 20 at the Portland AFSCME office, June 23 at the Salem AFSCME office, and June 30 at the Eugene AFSCME office. All presidents’ meetings will begin at 6 p.m. In addition there will be an open house during the late afternoon and early evening of June 22 at the Portland office for members and community partners to meet Michael and say farewell to Ken Allen as he transitions into retirement. More dates and locations may be added as well and we will share those additional dates as they get added.
If you are a registered Oregon voter you should have received in the mail the last week of April your Oregon ballot. Ballots are due to your county election office by Tuesday, May 17 and you may receive a reminder phone call from a fellow AFSCME member to turn in you ballot if you haven’t yet turned it in. Phone banks and canvasses are being scheduled throughout the state to support candidates and ballot measures that your elected Board has endorsed. Please see the attached schedule of GOTV (Get Out The Vote) events and participate in as many as you can. For a list of Oregon AFSCME endorsements see the posting on our website.
All locals should have received by now the AFSCME International Convention Call. The convention is July 18-22 in Las Vegas. Nominations and elections of local delegates can begin in your locals but delegate credentials must be submitted to our International Union no later than June 27. If your local has a resolution that it wishes to submit to the convention, all resolutions are due no later than June 28. In addition to the Convention Call packet of information there is helpful information posted on the Oregon AFSCME website including instructions for signing up for housing and credentials. All credentials and housing for Oregon locals will be collected and coordinated by Oregon AFSCME. To sign up for a hotel room at the convention please click here.
The next meetings of the Political Action Committee and the Executive Committee are on May 21 at the Portland AFSCME office at 10 a.m. and noon respectively. The next meeting of the Board is August 20 at the Salem AFSCME office. All meetings are open to any member.
I plan to send a president’s report like this every month to local presidents, members of the Oregon AFSCME board, and any member who requests it and gives the Council Secretary a home email address. And don’t forget, you can now access all monthly President’s Reports on the Oregon AFSCME website. If you are a local president or other local officer, please share this information with the members of your local.
If you ever have any questions or wish to send me a comment, you can reach me at president@OregonAFSCME.com.
Thank you for being active in your union.
